about
“Bambi” was a 21-year-old Milwaukee Playboy model and police officer who was convicted of killing her new husband’s ex-wife in 1982, before escaping prison and living on the lam in Canada. This true crime inspired song was recorded at Johnny Cash’s historic “Cash Cabin” with producers Patrick Sansone (Wilco) and John Jackson (The Jayhawks).

lyrics
“Bambi”
With a .38
On the 28th of May
They shot her point blank
And got away
Now Miss March is guilty
The prosecutors say
Papers write she
Was a waitress at the Playboy Club
Now her husband’s ex wife
Is in a bed of blood
Worst of all she found by
Her own two sons
Made up a motive
The jury believed
An easy out of
Child support and alimony
She could not produce an alibi
While she was dreaming
It’s life on the lam
Watch us running hand in hand
Life on the lam
Love like this in a foreign land
Turned 22 in prison
The days crept slowly by
Her husband said guilty
And found a new girl on the fly
They sipped mai thais
Under the Florida sky
She found someone new, too
In the visiting hours room
He said, “Babe, I would do
Anything for you”
I’ll be on country road K
With a getaway at noon
Took her jeans to the laundry
Through a window she fleed
And there he was waiting
On the other side of the trees
She said, “They all call me Bambi
But you can call me Laurie”
[CHORUS]
And so the sun it set
On their cheap Chevrolet
Two honeymooners
Up to Thunder Bay
Welcome to Canada
Enjoy your stay
[CHORUS]

The studio band included drummer Jon Radford (Justin Townes Earle), John Jackson on mandolin and violin, Patrick Sansone on keys, Quinn Scharber on Nashville tuned guitar, and Jim Hoke (Dolly Parton, Paul McCartney) on tin whistle and accordion. Produced by John Jackson (The Jayhawks, Ray Davies) and Patrick Sansone (Wilco), the recording sessions for Siren Songs took place at Johnny Cash’s historic Cash Cabin in Hendersonville, TN where Schoepp and his collaborators recorded with instruments found on the storied grounds – ranging from Cash’s 1930s Martin guitar and June Carter Cash’s Steinway piano to an old railroad spike.
Hey Scott, thanks for brightening up my world with a timely collection of gems from the dungeon. Stay safe and keep the goodies coming. funparkfugitives
Any collection that kicks off with Nikki Lane channeling Wanda Jackson is worth having by definition. The rest is just fine, too, especially Seratones' apocalyptic take on State Trooper. New West clearly curated this collection with care. Paul Goode
